Supermarket Insurance

Pace Insurance understands the Supermarket/Grocery Industry.

Through advising clients and implementing suitable risk management practices and safety campaigns, Pace Insurance can ensure that Supermarkets/Grocery clients reduce the frequency and severity of claims.

Exposure in this industry sector is high based on the following factors.

Cool Rooms and Building Constructions - composite panels consist of a material core, of various thickness, held between metal or plastic facings. They have been used extensively in external and internal wall and roof construction for a variety of occupations but more particularly in the cold storage and food industry.

It is important to note that some of the insulation core materials in common use today are combustible.

These can be referred to as Foam Insulated Sandwich Panels (FISP). FISP are highly combustible materials and commonly referred to as "solid petrol".

This composition provides for significant disadvantages:

  • Potential rapid fire spread within a panel
  • Difficulty in fighting fire where the concealed core is involved
  • Melting polystyrene core creating a spreading burning liquid fire
  • Delimitation of panels can occur exposing the combustible core to direct fire impingement increasing the rate of fire spread
  • Liberation of dense corrosive and toxic smoke

Due to the nature of fires involving combustible core sandwich panels (particularly EPS/XPS), the efforts by the Public Fire Brigades may only be limited to life safety operations and defensive firefighting to prevent the spread to adjacent buildings. Additionally, even a relatively small contained incident could result in considerable smoke contamination and collateral damage to buildings, contents, stock, machinery and equipment with a high financial loss and disruption to the activity undertaken.

  • A high fire load therefore high fire potential
  • Specialist fittings, fixtures and store outfit
  • Likelihood of replacement premises locally being unavailable
  • Rebuilding and restoring business to pre-loss levels
  • High levels of predatory competition
  • Exposure to significant consequential loss
  • Environmental Liability

Other risks associated with this occupation include:

  • Theft
  • Money
  • Fidelity
  • Machinery Breakdown & Electronic Breakdown
  • Public Liability
  • Advertising Liability
  • Liquor Liability
  • Product Liability
  • Product Recall
  • Product Guarantee
  • Sale of imported goods direct to customers
  • Sale of processed perishable goods in delicatessens, meat and dairy sectors. High risks of food poisoning and contamination
  • Product tampering
  • Labelling errors, packaging issues
  • False and misleading product recommendations
  • Workers Compensation
